Thought I would start a new thread based on this info. . .
I just spoke to a manager at the Temecula based Calloway Winery asking to buy a used barrel. They sell them for $20, and I thought great. \I told the mgr that I was going to use it for fuel for BBQ, he said, "I moved from Texas 3-years ago and I wanted to do the same thing, but our barrels get sprayed/treated with a preservative when they are new".
Needless to say, he has never used his own barrels in his New Braunfels smoker.
That was enough for me - so, if you go the barrel route, you might want to ask about their treatment. He did say that not all wineries treat their barrels.
The search continues.
