can a soldering newbie build this?

This is a thread where I posted pictures of my setup. I started with the dog dish. But, I moved to a sink drain. My fan is enclosed in a cardboard box, which is the part keeps me from being totally satisfied. But, I don't have any issues because of that. So, I'm not going to worry about replacing the cardboard any time soon.

My sink drain fits pretty tight against the smoker. I know I get a little air coming in around it. But, I can't see what difference it makes. Air has gotta get air from somewhere. And, I don't see a problem if a little air comes from around the edge and some from the fan. I can easily compensate for any natural draft by adjusting closing the vent by turning the drain. So, if too much is getting in via natural convection, I can just close the vent a little. That's the main reason that I like the sink drain more than the dog dish. Also, it just slips on vs. requiring bolts.

I'm planning to cook a brisket this weekend. I will probably start it tomorrow evening. I'll try to send you a link to the live cook, if you want to see it in action. Last cook, I tweaked the PID settings based on a post by Bryan. I haven't really given them a good try since then. So, I'm anxious to see how they work. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure what they are. But, I'll find them when I send the link.

Awesome Darren! Thanks for the info.

Now I've gotta go by a sink drain. I love that it just pops on over the vent. I forgot to put my bolt in until after I started the chimney, so it was a miracle that I didn't burn myself right out of the gate.

Definitely let us know how the brisket cook goes. I'd also love to know how much fuel you use, how much you lit, etc. I really want to do some briskets this year, especially now that I have the HM to regulate the temp better.
