I had barbecue at Wood Ranch way back in 2002 and again last week while visiting Valencia. With something like 18 locations scattered across Southern California, the Valencia location is found in a suburban shopping center and has a "premium-casual" steakhouse vibe--dimly lit, rich wood interior, lots of booth seating, with a bar near the entrance and a bustling somewhat open kitchen in the back. There's also a semi-enclosed dining patio with overhead fans to make bearable the hot temps in Valencia. We were there on a Saturday night and the place was doing a good business.
Mrs. TVWB ordered small plates of brisket and pork ribs, while I had tri-tip and smoked chicken breast with mac & cheese and fries. Brisket was sliced from the point and was moist with good flavor. The ribs were good and meaty, but a smallish portion and just on the verge of being fall-off-the-bone. My tri-tip was a single medium-sized piece presented as a steak. It was grilled to medium doneness and had very good flavor. The chicken was presented as two thin filets with the tenderloin removed, had nice grill marks and smoky flavor, but on the edge of being a little dry. A thin sweet house barbecue sauce and an optional thick chipotle barbecue sauce are served on the side. Mac & cheese and fries were both servicable but nothing amazing.
The complimentary buttery garlic rolls are soft pillows of delicious bready goodness and are served with house barbecue sauce for dipping. Every time they offered more rolls, we said yes!
So Wood Ranch is not your typical BBQ joint and I wouldn't go there expecting it to be that, but it was a nice higher-end dinner with attentive service and some tasty food. Dinner for two with two drinks and no dessert including tax and tip was $107.
I really fell down on the job in terms of photos, these are the only ones I got.
