buying wood in bulk question....

searched craig's list for some smoke wood. found a place in Gilroy that sells it by the cord or fractions of.

1/8th cord $40
1/4 cord $70.

they have Red OAK, Apple, Alder, Apricot, Cherry.

so when I searched google for the weight of a cord of wood, it states that a cord of apple weighs 4400 pounds. so a 1/4 cord of apple weighs 1100 pounds? this sounds way off to my simple minded brain. So any input you smoking pros can give a newbe, that would be great.

That is its green weight. Its seasoned weight will be considerably lighter. Moisture content is the key (and missing) variable.
 
For a "casual" smoker, even a 1/4 cord of wood is a lot... which is probably why they sell even in 8ths.

I guess the question is if you are stick burning or using charcoal and wood for smoke.

A cord of wood is generally measured by length(s) not weight. 4'x4'x8' is the standard measurement of a cord. I'd contact the vendor for shipping weight. As Kevin points out, that's probably a green weight. If so, you'd probably prefer a seasoned wood if it's available - lighter and ready to use.
