butt smoke using Minion Method question?

Hello all-

Well it's time for my first butt smoke! I've got 2 butts approx 12.5# combined weight. I plan on using the renowned Mr. Brown recipe. Also, I'm going to use the Minion Method - my question is how much charcoal will be sufficient? I would think 2 chimney's would be enough??

P.S. I get to break in the Maverick that arrived this week as well!
 
Fill that ring up with as much charcoal as it will hold....whatever is left over you can use next time. More than once I've filled it up and still had to add more in the morning to finish.

It all depends on outside temps, wind, etc. But by all means, err on the side of too much. You don't want to walk out in the morning and find your a cold butt.....bummer!
 
For a long cook like pork butt, I would fill the charcoal ring pretty much full & then add the lit coals on top of those. The butts will probably take 12+ hours to cook (my last one took 15-1/2 hours), and you don't want to add any more fuel unless you have to.
