My BGE gets hot enough that I can't touch it.

This was really about insulation and airflow. But yes, if you get a BGE temp up high enough, the outside will get pretty hot. But if you put your hand on the top of the Smokefire or a Weber kettle running at 600 degrees you will probably blister your hand and possibly leave skin stuck to the grill surface.
