Brisket Source in the Northern Virginia/DC Area


 
i buy my briskets from the super wally world in winchester. there's also a butcher in eastern market that also sells them and i can find their name if you need it.
 
Do you have a Sam's Club near you and want to join? They sell USDA Choice whole briskets. If you don't see what you want in the display case, ask them if they have any. They love selling whole briskets.
 
Thanks for the tip on the butcher at Eastern Market. It has been awhile since I have been to Eastern Market and I completely forgot about Union Meats. Thanks, again.
 
Steve - Actually we belong to BJs and not Sams. I could try explaining to the butcher (maybe the term butcher is stretching his job title) at BJs again the concept of a whole brisket rather than the flat that he tried so hard to sell me but I just do not have the energy.
 
Tell him you want a brisket over 10 lbs. Even if he doesn't know the difference, if he finds one it will be a packer.
 
Brian - I checked with the butcher at Eastern Market and they have 12 - 15 pound briskets at 2.99 per pound (choice). They had prime but I forgot to ask how much per pound.

What is Walmart charging these days for brisket?

last brisket i got at wally world (1 week ago) was $1.89 per lb for select. i've never seen anything but select there but who cares when it comes to brisket.

Thanks, Brian. Union Meats only had choice and above. Looks like it might be worth it to make the drive to Walmart.
 
Living in North Carolina, where Pork rules the day, I had found it very difficult to find Brisket at any of the local grocery stores.

That all changed when our new Super Wal-Mart opened. I have been pleasantly surprised by some of the cuts of meat at Wal-Mart and specifically, with their selection of Brisket.

I would suggest checking out your local Super Wal-Mart.
 
If you're OK with just cooking flats (I actually prefer flats to whole briskets), you usually can find good to excellent ones in cryopacks at Shoppers Food Warehouse. Kinda pricey, though.
 
Thanks, Randy. I will check. I ended up buying a 11 pound packer from Union Meats in Eastern Market. Turned out great. Maybe this weekend I will make the short trip to Shoppers.

Yeah they finaly went up in price last year. For 4 years they were holding at $1.28lb. Even so at $1.68 lb it's the best deal in town here.
