Being new to this, I was hoping to receive some suggestions on how far from the house to place my WSM for cooking. Our house has an L-shaped corner outside, just off the kitchen where the WSM would receive a lot of wind protection, just not sure how far back it should sit from the house as I don't want the smoke coming indoors.

Thanks for any input!

Hi Connie
Welcome to the VWB.
My outdoor cooking area, is approximately 15' from my rear door. I do not get, the sweet smell of pork, slowly smoking in apple wood in the house, even though I sometimes wish I would. /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
That being said, the cooker should not act as a locomotive, trudging up a long incline, either. You should barely see white whisps of smoke coming from the dome of the cooker. But the aroma should surround the cooker.
What's planned for the maiden voyage?

Jim

We are going to try a pork butt. I've been reading a book by Paul Kirk and want to try some of his recipes. Can't wait!

Hi Connie, and welcome.

Mine's only 5-10 feet from the house, but not right in front of a door or open window. Haven't had a problem, yet, but I'm still a bit of a newbie.

As Jim says, you're looking for a light smoke. A little smoke aroma won't hurt the house if it gets in. Besides, you'll have plenty of aroma when you pull that butt indoors. Love that smell.

Hi,

Thanks again for the input from everyone. We live in Snohomish County, three or four miles north of Woodinville. It's great to see so many people from Washington on posting on the boards. I noticed today that a recent post discussed a pitmaster class -- sounds like we missed it by a couple weeks. Anything else go on in Washington?

When I was in my condo, I was forced to smoke right outside my patio door. Obviously, with the door open, I would get some great smells in the unit, but with the door closed, the only time I would get any scents would be when I was running the heater or AC (vent was right there).

It was never a burning smoke though - always a nice cooking smell, just like you would have when roasting something in the oven.

Last weekend in May (Saturday) at Red Hook Brewery the biggest competition the NW offers.
Come by, you can sample and ask all the question you want. Myself, Teddy bear BBQ, and JuJu's Dad will all be there.

We are a little further up the road in Monroe. Click on the house logo by my name or use the URL below the entire PNW list of events is on my website. I have a Weber Kettle on the deck outside my Kitchen maybe 6 feet from the door and smoke is not an issue. We are getting ready for State Championship in Winthrop on the 11th this weekend and will be serving samples from 1 to 6 on Saturday. I paid my money for Winthrop and Redhook on the way home tonight /infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Hi Connie
You don't mention what type of footing, your cooker will be on. Make certain that the area is level. Also, if your putting your cooker on a concrete patio, I would advise some sort of shield between the cooker and concrete. Spills that sometimes arise near the cooker, can be dastardly, and unsightly.
I have incorporated, a cooking area that has small washed stone, about 8" thick, so any spills are just easily washed away, leaving no tell tale signs.

Thank all of you so much for the information. I've decided to make a home for our WSM quite near the house, in an L-shaped cove outside our kitchen windows. I'll make a floor for it out of some 2' x 2' stone tiles we already have. I would like to make some sort of table that could stay there too, something that could handle hot items, handle living in the weather, and cleans up well.

I'm excited that there are upcoming events in Washington. What a treat to be able to see the pitmasters in action. I can hardly believe that there may be samples offered!!! Hope to hear more about the events on this BB!

Thanks again to all of you, it has been so nice to find this BB.

Oh, and Jim. I've got some incredible sealer that we used on our stamped concrete patio. I'll use several coats of that so that the spills will hose off easily. Thanks so much for mentioning it!
