Beef, Peppers and Avocado Fajitas

Didn't plan ahead as well today as I did with last night's Roadside Chicken. Grabbed some tenderized 'hip steaks' on the way home from work and decided on fajitas.

Rubbed the steaks with cumin, chipotle powder, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt and black pepper. Tossed peppers in EVOO and halved an avocado.

On the way home I also corrected that 'no-beer' situation. Sam Adams has just started showing up in my neck of the Great White North, I liked the Summer Ale.

Put the steaks over 3/4 chimney of briquettes with peppers and avocado on indirect.

Gave the steaks 4 or 5 mins a side on direct and then switched them with the peppers and avocado for a few minutes. The beef was a little tough if not sliced good and thin. If I was to buy this cut again I'd give it shorter over direct and longer on indirect.

You might also try letting the beef rest, seasoned, at room temperature for at least an hour too. See "the best dang steak ..." thread.

Thanks Dale, I've tried that with nice ribeyes and T-bones before, didn't know it would help tougher cuts.

Hmmm. Now that you mention it, I haven't tried that on a thinner cut like your hip steak, but it should help based on Kevin's post here.
