Hello all. I was watching Food Network a few weeks ago and saw the Cook's Tour special about BBQ. Tony visited the Carolinas, KC and Texas in his search for the best BBQ.

In KC one of the cooks teaches a class on BBQ and says he tells his students to use equal parts celery salt, garlic salt, onion salt and seasoned salt then add no more than two other ingredients of your choice to make it your own.

Has anyone ever heard of this? It seems like it would be WAY to salty.

Sounds like a Paul Kirk's recipe, the basic theory is one cup of sugar to one cup of salt. Using celery, onion, garlic and season salts cuts down the overall amount of salt you use. Salt is a needed ingredient in bbq rubs to achieve the desired results you after in a rub.
The adding no more than two ingredients is newer to the class and of course you can add more than two if you want.
The class is to teach you the basics of producing your own rub.
