Its been a couple of weekends but I thought I'd pen a short note on my impressions of the big apple bbq party.
First, it was very, very hot and very, very crowded. I was lucky enough to purchase a fast pass from a poster here at a discount. With the fast pass, we didn't wait more than 10 minutes on any line which helped a great deal.
First up was pulled pork from ed mitchell. Over the years, I've read so many great things about Ed's bbq but Ed's place closed before the kids were old enough to stop for Q on our annual trip to sc. At first glance, I didn't think I'd like the pulled pork...no bark, it looked wet and molded on the plate. However, after the first bite, I was hooked. Ed uses a delicate nc vinegar sauce with just a little bite. The meat was tender but perfectly cooked with just a hint of smoke. I think ed was cooking whole hog for the event.
Next up were ribs from Mike Mills. I love Mike's book, peace, love and bbq and his award winning ribs are legendary. On this day, I have to say I've done better in my backyard with Mike's recipe. The ribs were good but a little mushy to my taste. Mike's famous "magic dust" rub was recognizable but a little wet.
Next up was another portion of pulled pork, this time from big bob gibson's bbq. This pork was had great bark mixed in and was absolutely first rate. At this point, we were pretty full but decided to try some new brunswick stew from the Proclamation Stew Crew. Wow, this was great but filling.
that was about it for us, we spent the rest of the fast pass money on shirts, rub and sauce. The event was extremely well organized and the crowd had a nice vibe. If you live in or around nyc , I definitely recommend buying a fast pass and braving the crowds. In the end, I'd say the two pulled pork dishes were the best I've ever had (and I've had as well as prepared a lot).
best,
