I used my WSM for the first time Sunday (great pork loins). Anyway, I'm wondering about the removal of the ashes. Is there a best practice on this? Should I just turn the bullet on its side and sweep 'em out? Or is there a niftier way top do it?

And, should this be done after every cook?

After I'm sure the ashes contain no live embers, I lift the bottom bowl, turn it sideways, and empty the ashes into a typical supermarket plastic bag. Then I dump the bag into our trash container. That's the easiest way I've found.

I just dump them in an ash can first to make sure they are out before dumping in the trash. I clean mine out after every cook, but you probably don't need to be so anal. If the ash gets wet or gets moisture in it, it creates lye which will eventually cause rust.

Let it sit overnight and then dump into the garden.

I till the garden twice every year and this is a great way to improve the potash content and also the "texture" of the soil. We have heavy clay based soil here in IN.

The easiest way I have found is to place a heavy duty trash bag over the top of the bottom bowl. Then, tilt the bottom bowl on it's side, with the trash bag still covering the open end of the bottom bowl, and slowly dump/sweep the ash into the bag. You can reuse the trash bag over again.

Just make sure the ash/coals are cold.
