Are the older Webers thicker?

Here's why I ask. Have you ever noticed the older ones get deep chips? The newer ones just get a shallow hole and rust. It seems like the coating is much thinner on the newer ones. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes thicker in both mateiral and coating..I have some older dasiy wheel's model's and there a much better grill imo.
 
my neighbor has a daisy wheel, i have a one touch, and seem like the lids weigh the same to the feel but his just seems more beefy. maybe the porcelin is just thicker
 
based on my yellow and avacado grills, there really doesnt appear to be any difference in weight, but the paint appears a bit thicker on the older grills, but not by too much.
 
I'll jump in Shaun (even though I do not have an old one). I'll say this...look at things made years ago and look at things made today. Today it's all about quantity NOT quality. Things made years ago were always made so MUCH BETTER than they are today.
 
Thanks for the replies. I have been pondering this as well. Does anyone know if they are all black before the color is added on the colored ones? That could explain it. Also the older ones usually have a gunkier lid.
 
Late reply ...Not only are the older lid's thicker and built better....My new ots has a lid that fit's so loose you'd have to BBQ/Grill on it a 1000 time's just to try and seal it up!!!! By the way i'am not new to weber and there kettel's ....been using them for over 35+ year's And my dad has alway's had one since they first came out.
 
Thanks James, any chance he had an original? I think if you do a few smokes it should start to seal.
 
Shaun i already cook on the ots about 20 times now THERE is noway that lid will ever seal right lol Fit's so loose the coal's won't even die out with all vent's shut lol
 
Is it possibly out of round? My 26er was out of round and leaked badly. I hugged the lid as round as I could and then did several heavy smokes and that did the trick. It still leaked a little but it wasn't a problem anymore. One thing I do find a problem is hook on accessories make it difficult to control the temp and have to be removed for shut down.
 
It never ceases to amaze me that every time I go to a home center or big box store I wiggle the lids on the new Webers. They ALL seem to have a tremendous amount of play in them, my old kettles have zero wiggle room and fit perfectly. Don't know why, just know that's the way it is.
