Are my Porcelain CI grates supposed to rust after a year?

Hey everyone.

New to the board...but here's a pic of my baby along with his little brother Joe. :)

Here's a picture of the grates. Is it normal for them to rust already? It's been a year, but the rust has been ilke this for at least the last 6 months.

The flavorizer bars too have some spots of rust--almost like nicks in it.

Is this normal?
 
Mine lasted 4 years before rust got them. I had a fire that burned off some of the porcelain. They were replaced under warranty. The new grates are much thinner so u don't expect the same life. If it got much worse I would call weber. As for the bars, mine lasted 3 years. They started rusting early but did not burn through.
 
bbq some greasy food, burgers are the best. then brush clean but not down to the bare iron and leave the meat grease and oil on them.

(you might turn them over, theyre upside down. but I know guys who do that all the time)

don't lift the lid...
 
With my new grates I am rotating them. This way both sides get seasoned. I love the look of the new spirit.

I've done both. I turn it up to the highest level before cooking to burn off any old grease or gunk, and then scrape them while they're hot with the 'T' weber brush or the weber bamboo brush.

I do this before and after the cook (OCD I know).

I take really good care of this grill..that's why I am surprised to see rust already on the grates. :(
 
Just do what I do with both my Wolf (bare CI grates) and my Q220. Brush them down after the cook and give a quick coat of oil (I just keep a bowl of Canola with an oiling rag). When I heat the grill up I get it ripping hot, brush it once more and than another apply another coat. One caveat though is I do not leave my Wolf grates outside in winter. This winter especially has been so brutal I have only fired up a grill on my deck once. I have been using only the Q or my indoor Lodge CI grill :-(
 
Cast iron is notorious for rusting. Keeping things oiled (or cooking greasy foods) do help a lot. I've used the CI & SS and much prefer the CI. But.... SS is foolproof. When I needed/ordered new grates for my Genesis, I went with CI again. But the flavorizer bars got upgreaded to (aftermarket) SS.

I def. will start rubbing down with canola oil once finished. I scrub the hell out of it after and before each cook...but probably should have been rubbing with oil now that I think about it...

Chad - Def will spring for SS flavorizor bars once they get too rusty. Good idea!
 
You actually have a pretty clean looking grate. But maybe too clean! I like to clean mine after each use with a regular scrub brush, but only just enough to get most of the burned food off. I don't want to risk scraping off the outer porcelain enamel, or any other coating if it's cast iron. And the minor grease residue can be left on there as seasoning. But of course, if it's going to sit unused over the winter, I'd definitely wash it and bring it inside (and away from the elements).
