Apples

Had a friend show up from Az. yesterday and was showing him my new WSM. He claims a friend of his cuts up apples and puts them on his coals when smoking meats. Has anyone heard of this or tried it?

I've heard of folks cutting up apples, oranges, herbs, peaches, etc. It's the same thought of having a flavored wood. I've never done it as I just stick with wood.

Thanks E Mann, I may test some at the end of a kettle cook to see what I get. Wood seems the way to go, but who knows.
