Any Experience Using Infrared Surface Thermometers for Grilling?

I saw this Maverick thermometer in a news article for "10 Great Gadgets for Summer Grilling". I love practical, effective toys but I can't see how it can measure internal temps.

Anyone have first hand experience using toys like this? Thanks.

I have a different brand. It does not replace a food thermometer. It just measures surface temps. I used mine to measure the surface of a pizza steel plate.

I had one and hated it. I was setting up for a garage sale and one of the pre-dawn buyers showed up and offered me $200 which I gladly took. The regulators are more tempormental than 3-rd wife

Have one and they are useless for measuring internal temps. I use mine for RC aircraft battery pack.
