Another New Holiday Smoker

Received a 18.5 WSM for Christmas. Really excited to fire it up. Ended up getting the 2013 model without the temp probe hole. I am considering returning it and trying to find a 2014 with the hole. I am getting a Maverick thermometer so the hole would be nice. It was purchased from Lowes so returning it should not be an issue. Lowes does not have them in stock, you need to order online and have it shipped to the store. I'm not sure how to make sure I get the 2014 model if I order another one from them. Maybe I will try home depot or somewhere else. Anyways, looking forward to trying it out. I have been browsing the forums here for some time and have learned a lot. I give this forum credit for changing my mind from getting a Traeger to getting a WSM! I think I will have more fun with the WSM than I would with the Traeger. Hope everyone had as great a Holiday as I did.

Welcome Dave. I also thought of getting a pellet smoker. I ended up getting a Weber gas assist Performer and a WSM 22.5. Really love the WSM. great choice!

So...I decided to return my 18.5 so I could get the 2014 model. Oh, and I accidently ordered the 22.5 instead of the 18.5  . I hope it arrives soon and is the 2014 model.

Welcome to the family. I started with the 22 and added the 18 this summer after I scored a 13 model from an estate sale. Love em both.

Personally, I'm A-OK with ~not~ having the '14 model. The only difference is the additional of the silicone grommet for probes and handles on the lower cooking grate. I'm a huge fan of the slot/notch modification and I wasn't concerned with taking a grinder to either one of the '13 model WSM's. To me, the slot/notch is easier to use than grommets. Having built-in handles on the lower cooking grate from the factory would be nice, but using 2 U-bolts works just fine.

My 22.5 finally arrived today. It is a 2014 model. I only had a few minutes to take a peek at it when it arrived. Had a little issue in shipping. The grates fell down and into the center section. I didn't notice any scratches so it should be fine. Only other issues were the center section was a littl out of round (Gave it a little hug to fix) and the door needs some tweaking to get it to seal better. I hope to assemble it tonight. I can't wait for this weekend to come...I can smell it now!

Welcome to the site, Dave! As you can see, I don't own a WSM (yet), so for now I get by with smoking on my charcoal grills. I think when my boys become teenagers in a few short years, I'll definitely be needing one, because they LOVE the food I prepare!

Thanks for sharing!

welcome dave, great bunch out here. youll be glad you made that 4-inch error. hehehe. good luck chief.

don't lift the lid...

You are going to love the 22. Also ditch the stock door for the Cajun Bandit and get the nomex gasket. Mine was out of round also when I got it. Played with it for a while and was not totally happy with it. Called Weber and they sent me a new middle section and told me to keep the other. So I will continue to work on it and build another. Enjoy
