How are you guys knowing the temp in your kettles? r u using a oven therm. I dont like that ideal cause you have to keep openining lid to see. I was thinking about drilling a hole and adding a therm. Thought about putting it next to top vent so when indirec cooking, i always have vent over food and it would give me a accurate reading rather then being over hot coals. could also drill into bowl just under grate level to get a real accurate reading. Any thought ??? thanks

Hi Corey,

I use either a dual probe or 2 singe probe thermometers. I wad up a small ball of foil around the base of one probe (instead of pushing it through a cork) and stand it up between the grates so that it is a good three - four inches above them. The wire is insulated with high heat silicone so no worries there. just thread it over the lip of the kettle and close the lid. The lid won't kink the wiring and you can set the base on your table. If you are using a dual probe, use one on the grat and the other into the meat. Models include the Mavericks that get a lot of talk here, as well as Polders and Taylors. You can look on Amazon for them or they can be found in any department store's house or kitchenware section.

I use both a Polder's dual probe and a Taylor's single probe.

Regardless of where you install the thermometer on the lid you won't get an accurate reading unless the probe reaches or is set at grate level.

I like to just stick a thermometer with a long enough stem down one of the vent holes.

I ordered one from Weber (told them I wanted one for the performer because I cook HH) for one of my WSM's, I like it very close to the vent for indirect Q'n. I am not concerned with grate temp as much as I am just a general idea of where the temp is.

Not 100%, but I think around $12-17. It is just like the WSM thermos as in 20-40ish off (low) from vent temp but all are close in boiling water.
