I just picked up a 14.5" WSM from Walmart on clearance for $99 and wanted to do the external heat shield mod that so many people other are doing. Although the other mods look like a better long term solution, I wanted to do it in such a way that I could return it to its completely stock form (no drilling or cutting). This is what I came up with:
With the base upside down, I measured 1" and made a mark with a pencil on all three legs. I used some heat resistant silicone that I picked up from a local auto parts store to attach 1 1/2" L brackets to the legs. Done. I may end up using a dab of silicon on each L bracket to hold the heat shield in place, but it's pretty secure the way it is. Also, I like being able to easily remove it for cleaning.
Thanks to all the other people who posted their ideas on heat shield mods for giving me the motivation. Here's a few pictures.
