America's Test Kitchen, on the episode that aired on PBS today, reviewed the Brinkman, Big Green Egg, and Weber Smokey Mountain.

The winner was ... Weber Smokey Mountain.

They liked the number of vents for temp control, charcoal grate rather than bowl, temperature gauge with real numbers, dual grills for capacity, and water pan. The only ding was the lack of handles.

I never understood why the lack of handles is such a big deal. Sure it would be nice to have them but a rag in each hand or a set of insulated gloves let you move the center section easily.

I understand the lack of handles being a problem, even with insulated gloves if you want to re-fuel or your fire goes out picking up the middle section of the WSM without having to break it completely down is tricky, especially with a 2 gallon water bowl. But that is why you guys are here to show us new owners how to easily fix that situation.

I did plenty of research before my WSM purchase a few years ago and have never regretted it. Still, it's good to see the public acclaim it deserves. I guess we should all prepare for a rush of new members here...

Personally, the WSM seems to have enough handles for me. Where else would you add them -- the middle section? On the other hand, a set of caster wheels would help. Can always add them myself...

Adding handles to the mid-section of my 18.5" WSM was one of the best mods for me.
My garage is 25' outback of the crib, and I store my Weby inside it. I always load the meat onto the grates before I lift the mid- section onto the charcoal bowl, and handles just make my life much more easier.
And when temps are below 0, trying to lift and carry a round frosty piece of porcelain enameled metal with gloves can be a little tricky.
