Adjusting ash/damper blades on 26 ?

I had some ham glaze drip into bottom of my 26 and harden. First time I swept ash, I forced the blades over it and bent them. I took the blades off to clean the glaze and bent them back to re-install. They were too tight, had trouble sweeping the bottom. I tried to bend them outa little without taking them out of the Kettle and went too far.

Is there a better way to do this other than trial and error ?

Also, it appears to me, that Weber used the same blade that's in the 22 Kettle. Seems to me they need to be made for the 26, both in length and shape.
