Adding wood to charcoal

So I've never really added wood chunks to my charcoal before in my OTG (I've used chips but not chunks)...I have a smoker and have always used that for smoking meat.

So for example if I'm doing chicken indirect....do I add the charcoal directly to the gray coals? And if so...do you let it burn for a while first or just throw the wood and meat on and shut the lid.

I guess I'm concerned with the wood chunk flaming up and ruining what's under the lid. Thanks!
 
Just put the wood chunk on the coals. Let it catch fire then put the lid on and put your food on. That's what I do and have good results.
