Are they usually a little small? Definitely some air gaps and doesn't sit secureIy. I may use the steamer shelf as the expansion ring on the bottom to get a better seal and stability.

Sits a little bit better after adjusting the steamer part. Next issue is 14" grates don't fit inside. Who says they have to be round? I'll find an alternative.

Interesting when I built my mini about 10 years ago, I had a 32 qt Vasconia pot, and it fit perfectly.

slowly making progress. Yes, the thermometer is sideways but will be at 12 o'clock when at 250° and I'll be able to tell without leaning down to read it. The letters are a thin black text against a dark background and tough for my eyes to see. This orientation will be helpful.

first trials. No food just smoke. Kept the smoker dirty so I could find leaks. It's been at 250ish for about 30 minutes now.

That's exactly what I found. Not only that, the Weber cooking grate was at least a 1/4 inch to big to fit inside. I ended up using expanded metal.
