98 Genesis 3000 rehab question

Hi everyone, I'm a new member and am currently in the midst of refurbishing my 98 Genesis 3000 with side burner. My question pertains to paint, the lid is black and I want to change the color to red. I feel like the grill with everything black is just a little too much black. I have searched for a few hours and maybe I was looking wrong, but I can't find if anyone has painted the lid a different color and had success. I was planning on painting the sides and box black and the lid red. Any help would be great, thank you.

Hi Dan,

the 3000 is a great grill to have.

The short answer is that painting the lids does not really work. The paint has not much to grip to, then you are exposing it to very hot/cool/very/hot/cool cycles.

Factor in the cost of the high temp paint, and unless you are magic with a spray can, it is easier to find another Genesis for not much money, with a different coloured lid, and clean that up and use the rest for spare parts.

The lid on that Genesis is not painted it is coated with porcelain. Basically a coating of "glass". Painting on that is a travesty IMO. I have an old "platinum" lid. If interested PM me. Only issue is I don't know how much it would cost to ship it. I would not want much for it.

I wouldn't paint it. There are several examples on this site of people doing that and the new paint seems to always eventually flake off. The porcelain finish isn't meant to be painted over. Enjoy it as is or find another grill with a red lid and swap them out.

First, welcome to the site. It is a great place to learn and to share. Post pics of your rehab. As for the lid, as others have already stated, it is porcelain and won't take paint well. If you can find a red lid, that would be your best bet. You will really enjoy that grill. Did my 1000 about a year ago an it is great. Good Luck.

You can paint the sides of the lid (I recommend the Black semi-gloss), but as others have stated previously, painting the porcelain isn't going to look very good. I was in a similar boat as you, looking for a blue lid to match my performer. When I saw one on CL, I talked to the seller who was happy to trade for my clean black lid (and $20 for his trouble). We live in the same area and I have seen red Genny's pop up on CL occasionally, so keep your eyes open and get your black lid in nice shape until then!
