5 versus 10 cfm

Stoker website says the 5cfm is recommended for the 18 inch wsm. But elsewhere, it also says that on cold days, or 30 pound cooks, or wanting high temps, the 10cfm may be a good idea.

Any downside to buying an oversize fan? Might be nice to be safe and have lots of power, but a big 10cfm fan might over stoke when it runs in a small 18 inch wsm.

Comments?

I own an 18 WSM and have the stoker with a 5 cfm fan. It works great for what I do. I haven't tried to get temps over 325, but there are plenty of guys who do high heat cooks just by propping the door open.

Do you need an oversized fan? - I would say for the 18 the 5 cfm is fine

Would an oversized fan have any disadvantages? I am not sure...

There is a trade off. When a larger fan comes on, it can create a bigger spike than a small one. And that may make the fire less stable.
