2001 Weber Performer Deluxe SSP restoration


 
So, here’s the next issue for my restoration.
The interior of the fire bowl and lid will clean out nicely, over a few days, and I will put larger washers over the bolt holes after I clean out the rust. Would the red RTV gasket stuff work to seal the clean metal to the washes inside the kettle (should be just one, just enough to seal behind the washer) and not cause health issues?
Also, on the exterior, I have a similar plan in mind, but I also have some head gasket and exhaust manifold gaskets that I can’t sell (new) for an old big block restoration. I was considering cutting and using those in front of the washers to the bolt heads on the exterior…
Eventually I’ll buy a new bowl and lid, but I’ve other priorities at the moment.

The kettle has marinated in Easy Off and been scraped over 2 days, and is currently resting in its 3rd bath.

I want to express my gratitude and give a shout-out to Steve Hoch. My new whitewalls arrived today!

Also realized I’d forgotten the bracket in the 3rd pic, so I removed the door to get that back on. Managed not to scratch the stainless, so that was a positive.

I suppose I left the lid upside down too long in Easy Off in the trash bag in the garage.
I have some faint discoloration in spots, that won’t come out. Not a huge deal, as there are scratches and scars enough.

So, Ace, Home Depot, Sutherland, etc did not have the fiber washers, and I really need 1/4” x 1 1/4” diameter, like the stainless one in this photo. I did find a sheet of “u make it” black fiber gasket, but it seems too flexible. I thought I’d try cutting them. And we’re sure this is safe inside the kettle? Thanks-

Weber uses the fiber washers on the outside not the inside to shield metal fasteners from damaging the enamel.
Sorry I misread your post, but whatever you use a quick sacrificial burn off should take care of any off gasses.
 
I’ll be rolling with black stainless steel washers inside. Thanks.
Probably outside, too in some spots.
Ordered wooden spools for the lid bail, will probably need to take a drill bit to widen the holes.
