2001 (DA) One Touch Platinum repair

Hi folks,

Apart from my WSM 57cm I have a 57 cm One Touch Platinum. the one with the table on one side. looks like a Performer. It was my first Weber and I love it.

A Spring makeover is now required. it needs a new One Touch kit and a new charcoal grate (that would be number three). The main problem however is that one of the four flanges that support the charcoal grate is about to snap off. Weber no longer do replacement bowls for this model and even if they did I suspect the cost would be prohibitive. I have come to the conclusion that bolting through the bowl to secure a new flange may well be the best alternative as I suspect that welding a new flange strap on the inside of the bowl may not be the way to go. I would be grateful for any suggestions as I do not wish to dump this particular bit of Weber gear.

Are the other 3 flanges solid?


If so, I would drill a hole in the solid flange opposite the failing one (or maybe all 3 good ones), and secure a new, solid charcoal grate to the solid flange(s) with a stainless steel screw(s) and nut(s). You lose the ability remove the charcoal grate easily, but one screw (or 3) should hold the charcoal grate down even with a load of charcoal.

Realistically, you only have a limited time with a 15 year old kettle anyway.

Yes the other 3 flanges are solid but bent downwards somewhat. I like your idea for securing the grate because really, it is only moved when it is replaced.

I reckon with care I can get another ten to fifteen years out of it. I have changed the food grate for a four segment cast iron grate, added a Smokenator and drilled a 3/8 hole into the bowl and added a brass nipple with blanking cap for when it is not in use. The nipple takes the two probes from a maverick.

All in all I have had great fun for fifteen years with this great bit of kit. The build quality is far superior to my 2014 57cm WSM.
