1996 Genesis Redhead Restoration

Just picked this up from the original owner. Like a lot of y’all, he loved this Weber and it has been loved and used quite a bit. He tells the story of his wife yelling at him for spending over $500 for it in '96. Now she tells him it’s the best $500 they ever spent with the years of service. The original table was replaced years ago with left over treks that he had. The z bars look original and seems to be in good shape. He replaced the burners and igniter a few years ago and still going strong. New SS flavorizer bars were placed last year.

The crossbar where the firebox connects is rusted out. Saw Bruce’s video on the fix so that may be in my future unless I find a good donor. New grates are needed but not a large concern.

I think it’ll be a fun one. I hope to restore it and get a lot of years of service. Planning to gift it to my parents after all is said and done. DC7E9C0B-3FA1-4395-9928-28D7060BCDBE.jpeg

Those grates are just fine. They look to be stainless bar grates which were offered as an upgrade. Basically the same grates which came on the old 1st gen Summit grills

Definitely a candidate to restore, and I am with Larry (LMichaels) that those SS grates look to be a big plus for you.

I personally wouldn't fool around with another used piece of frame tubing. You can get a new replacement piece fairly reasonably, and, if you want to go all out get, a stainless-steel tube so that the rust monster is kept at bay pretty much indefinitely.

It looked like the grates were deteriorating. If you zoom in, it looks like the outer layer of the grates are peeling off. Unfortunately, it started to pour when I picked it up and made the unrest ions lol decision to just toss it.

I decided to take a gamble on another grill that I plan to pick up on Friday for $20. The grates look to be in better condition and I’ll see what else is salvageable.

OK sorry on second look they're the stamped stainless grates. Actually if not broken those grates are really quite good
