“White Rust” in cook box Weber Genesis 10000

I‘ve been restoring a Weber Genesis 1000. I cleaned the grimy cook box with an angle grinder with a wire cup brush. Since doing so I find areas covered with tiny white particles that easily wipes off. After looking it up it seems to be aluminum oxide. Its only appearing now on the inside as I painted the outside. Is there any treatment for this, or something to worry about?

Yeah, but don't confuse the oxidation with mold that looks similar and will sometimes show on the insides of the grill as well

Yep. If you leave a newly ground out cook box lay around, it will develop that white stuff. Unless you plan to install and use it quickly, you can simply wipe it down with some vegetable oil to keep that oxidation from forming.

Water brings out little white raised dots for some reason on cleaned firebox interior. My guess is fat remnants don’t like water - hydrophobic

They brush right off when dry
