    sous vide thread

OK, finally had time to try some PID tuning on the SSR Heatermeter setup. I switched to Celsius at the same time (a bit easier for the natives I show it to here in Germany). My setup is a 2kw electric smoker element in a Landmann 11091 smoker. First I got stable oscillation around a 70C...

    Webcam for Heatermeter 4.0

Awesome => works with my Lifecam HD-3000 as well now! I even was able to forward the port and access it via my noip account. So I'll definitely be able to monitor the BBQ from work  Very cool that you could find a solution, thanks a lot Bryan! I am definitely going to have to recommend...

    Webcam for Heatermeter 4.0

Hi Bryan, right, at least that's how I understand it. My Russian is normally composed of 1 word when Google isn't translating (Nyet!) ;-) Here's a list of Linux UVC supported cams, however I'm not sure how recently this driver was ported to OpenWRT. I hope it's just a small adjustment needed...

    Webcam for Heatermeter 4.0

Ooh, tempting, for someday... I think I have a garage and kitchen to build first before I enhance my brewing setup. Currently I'm just doing extract + specialty grains (a kind of mini-mash). But all the beers I've made came out pretty well, nothing average or lower so far, at least to my taste...

    Webcam for Heatermeter 4.0

OK, here is the latest: I got a Microsoft Lifecam HD-3000 because I found a Russian forum post where someone described (successfully) setting it up with OpenWRT. It's supported by UVC. Price was the same (for 720p) as some ancient GSPCA cams from 6-8 years ago. However, I don't get any...

    Webcam for Heatermeter 4.0

Hmm... might be difficult to route out of the nice 3D printed case I have already ;-). Besides a simple & cheap USB webcam with a mount I can screw to a post in my backyard should be fine. Just need some idea of a camera that's been tested with OpenWRT... edit, let's see if I win an ebay...

    Webcam for Heatermeter 4.0

Ha, great brewing setup! Yeah I had only thought about a motor for moving things in the mash tun or sparging. Valves would indeed be a pain. What might be good: software with configurable setpoints for the various rests, timing during the boil, etc. These could set off alarms which would be...

    Webcam for Heatermeter 4.0

I like the German beer but it's tough to get much variety in Munich, hence I started brewing. If I move to all-grain someday I foresee the HeaterMeter doing double duty as a BrewMeter... is there a mash tun project I can make as easily as heatermeter with motor controllers, etc built in...

    sous vide thread

Question to any SSR Heatermeter users who have tried it on an electric bbq: what PID values are you using? I found that the default fan-based values in the software are not ideal for a solid-state-relay controlled electric system. Probably the normal "sous vide" values are also way off for a...

    Webcam for Heatermeter 4.0

Cool, I will give it a try tomorrow (it's late here in DE, just back from a wedding and enjoying a Kellerbier). How do I install that from the webui exactly? I have only done one install and that was a build on a 1GB SD card with the Windows util ;-).

    Webcam for Heatermeter 4.0

Hehe, yes John - a lot of friends suggested an interior webcam. I thought about a glass window on the BBQ with a light & webcam outside, but this wasn't really my aim and would be tough with plastic melting points and smoke condensing on the inside of the glass. The goal is to display a picture...

HeaterMeter v4.0 for RaspberyPi / Standalone

I recommend this awesome 3D print case, just got mine today from Tom and it is super cool. My first 3D printed object! :-) http://tvwbb.com/showthread.php?36661-HM-version-4-Rpi-3d-print-case

    Webcam for Heatermeter 4.0

This thread should be a knowledge repository for those of us who want a Webcam on our Raspberry Pi Heatermeter 4.0. Probably I'm not the only one and maybe it's already solved, but I didn't find much when searching here or the web. Background: I've recently assembled the HeaterMeter 4.0 with v8...

    LinkMeter v9 Release

Aha - thanks Bryan!! Yep I bet that's it... just right now for some reason I can't connect to openwrt.org to get the packages. Will try it again later. cheers, dave

    LinkMeter v9 Release

Still on v8 I believe but would like to ask a question before I upgrade ;-). I tried to install some packages via the openwrt interface to setup a Webcam to monitor my BBQ's smoking status while I'm at work (a mile from home). And here's the error that I get for the first required package...

    sous vide thread

My HeaterMeter 4.0 seems to work fine including remote web access. I will be using it for an electric smoker instead of sous vide, but I guess the principle is closer to sous vide (electric element control) rather than fan control of a wood bbq. I'm preparing the SSR & power wiring, an old...

HM version 4 Rpi 3d print case

123d files obsolete :-/ Hi Tom, I've PM'd you about getting a case sent to Germany  One issue: I tried to open the 123d files but found that they are only working in the old Beta versions of 123design (which don't seem to be available anymore). The final version uses .123dx file format...

HeaterMeter v4.0 for RaspberyPi / Standalone

Dave S, that is a great idea to use a charcoal lighter. Simpler, cheaper, and probably less failure-prone than using a disassembled electric hotplate like what's in my current (fully manual) smoker. How do you have that element setup exactly? Looks like a metal shield between the charcoal...

HeaterMeter v4.0 for RaspberyPi / Standalone

Perfect, thanks! Will give that a try in a couple months when I get to my new house. In the meantime I think I'll order a HeaterMeter PCB and a RaspPi, as I don't have one yet... ;-) Looking forward to watching my bbq cook on a smartphone from work. Though maybe I need to get a smartphone first.

HeaterMeter v4.0 for RaspberyPi / Standalone

Has anyone adapted the HeaterMeter to control an electric hotplate? I've made a terracotta bbq smoker that I think should be good for an all-day smoke without any attention except maybe one or two wood chunk replenishments. But temp control will be crucial for unattended use. I would guess it...
