    Which portable?

I've got a Gold and the thing that made me decide in its favour over the Silver was the carrying handle and the fact that you can can move it while it's hot, if circumstances force you to. One such circumstance may be grilling out in the open and then having a freak thundershower hit when you...

Smokey Joe is an excellent grill

Ron, Are you referring to the one with three ways to set up coals in the SJG / SJP that I did up? I can e-mail you a copy if you want. Send me a PM.

    Smokey Joe Jumbo Craigslist Score

I think that many will agree that the discontinuation of the Jumbo Joe / SJP was a very strange decision by Weber. So many of us here still want them! As a happy owner of an SJG, I would still buy an SJP because when I cook for 4 or more, the Gold is just way too small. Weber? Anyone...

    Just picked up a SJG

Mac, have a look at this diagram that I did up a while back. It explains exactly how to get the side vents working, so that the design is not a problem. You need to create an internal convection inside the SJG for the vent setup to not be a problem. Good luck.

    SJG SJS Differences

The best way to set up an SJS/SJG for indirect grilling is to put a small rectangular drip pan in the middle of the grill, on the charcoal grate, and to make two side piles of charcoal, equivalent in size. If you're using an SJG, do it so that the coals are perpendicular to the side air vents...

Petition to bring back the SJP.

I agree!! I've just discovered this thread now, but wholeheartedly believe that Weber should bring back the SJP. I love my SJG, but sometimes you just need the extra grid space.

Why was the SJP (Jumbo Joe) discontinued?

The more I use my SJG (now with an understanding of how to get the side vents to work for me without causing any issues), I keep thinking that I could also use a Jumbo Joe. The Gold is great for around the house, but when you're cooking for more than two people, that 18.5 incher would be sooo...

    Cleaning kettles: Anyone use CLR?

CLR liquid - could that be used to clean the crud off a kettle, including the smoke stains on the lid vent? Opinions? Every now and then I like to give my kettle a good cleaning, but soap and water just don't seem to get the job done.

    Cutting legs off 18" OTS

Way to go, gentlemen!! The best portable grill Weber never made!! Weber, take note I love the ash can + short legs + carrying handle model. Absolutely the best design possible for a portable kettle of decent size.

what to cook with SJG while camping

I do a lot of indirect cooks on my SJG. Some of my favourites have been chicken thighs and quarters, also drumsticks; and ribs. You could also do quails or even a cornish hen.

Smokey Joe is an excellent grill

I did another cook on my SJG the other day - Cajun-rubbed chicken thighs. Used ½ a chimney of maple hardwood briquettes, divided along the sides with a central drip tray (scheme #1 as per diagram above). There was a bit of a breeze going on, and frankly with full vents open, that chicken was...

    Gold or Silver

During my first cook on my brand new SJG last year, I had no idea how to create the convection with the high side vents so I covered the entire bottom grate with lump. It was bloody hot with the lid off, but nearly went out completely with the lid on and all vents open. Since then, I realize...

Smokey Joe is an excellent grill

I do a lot of slow indirect cooks on my SJG, and so recently I find myself using setup #1 the most: it affords the greatest vertical space between the cooking grate and the top of the lid. Also, I can fit a narrow drip pan in the middle, whereas with setup #2 I had a tough time finding a pan...

Smokey Joe is an excellent grill

Shawn, I have in fact done up a diagram illustrating what works for me. Hope it can be of help to others as well.

Smokey Joe is an excellent grill

Actually, I think that if the SJG were designed even with the side vents, but having the vents positioned farther down, e.g. level with the charcoal grate, would have provided better intake venting. You can can get a decent convection going in a SJG as-is, but only if you position the coals in...

First cook on copper Smokey Joe Gold

Jake, thanks for the update. And that is a gorgeous copper Joey! I've been using my Joe Gold quite a bit lately and am finding the combination of a quick direct sear with the lid off, followed by a longer indirect roast with the lid on (all vents open) gives me very favourable results...

Smokey Joe is an excellent grill

Last year when I bought my SJG I filled it up with lots of charcoal and, not understanding how to create a convection with the side vents, found the lump constantly going out when I put on the lid. Since then, I have found that you really can't put more than 1/2 to 3/4 (max) of a chimney's...

Smokey Joe Gold - my venting experience

Well, finally I can report back that, just as I had suspected, banking the coals perpendicular to the two open side vents, and then having a section for direct searing and a cooler section for indirect baking, did work and the coals didn't go out on me. What most certainly doesn't work is to...

    Silver to Gold

You know folks, I really think that Weber should have made the Gold basically as a miniature version of the One Touch Gold 18- or 22-incher; that is, with a bottom damper & lever, AND a removable aluminum ash can, just like the OTG has but scaled down. Those features PLUS the fantastic...
