I finally finished this project and reclaimed the space in my garage. I hope the next one doesn't take 18 months! The right hand grate arrived damaged and I've since replaced it and seasoned it. I'm pleased with the cast iron after a few trial runs but it was cheap and I may try RC Planebuyers...

It's good to know that worked as it's not uncommon. I have shot my grill with IR thermometer and I don't think the bottom of the grill gets very hot. I seem to remember that when the firebox is 550 or so the bottom of the firebox was under 175 degrees.

Don't worry about using penetrating oil in the box. Once you reassemble and heat things up for 15 minutes or so any residue will be long gone.

Your restoration came out great and your grill is one of a kind due to your clever mods!

Oh I remember the big CRTs and I don't miss them one bit! We have had great luck with the Samsungs in general. The 8000 series is sweet. We made a lot of money with Fujitsu Plasma with a 30 point margin and the 63" at $25K! Those days are gone. We tell client's to buy their own TVs these days...

THyde, your grill looks fantastic! Great idea with the wood but I have a bunch of teak I scavenge from construction sites and use on my boat. That stuff (oiled) is impervious to weather and will not warp (plus I think it will look nice next to the black). I'll post pics along the way. Thanks...

This is a grill I picked up on the side of the road on Sunday. After a bit of research I'm fairly certain it's a '98 3000 or 5000. The serial # tag was on the removable side burner so I don't think that was an add-on kit. Weber site says it's a 3000, but many other sites say it's a 5000 so...
