    Cold-weather issues

The other night we had some really Foul weather - temperatures were below freezing we had significant wind as well as precipitation falling. Horrible conditions to say the least . I had the 18.5" Weber smoker fully loaded with 60 pounds of pork butts. Pan was dry and foiled. Whenever the...

    More Networking Fun

What I've seen repeatedly is that my HM when it boots iit's readily accessible over the wifi network - no issues connecting to it at all, navigating the menus, etc. Then what happens over time - on the local wifi network - if I click on anything to go into the settings it takes a long time or...

    Blower quit

I was in the middle of a run and the blower just stopped on me. Anyone have this happen before? I plugged another fan in and it worked fine. Any tips on debugging them? Are the standard blowers ok to leave outside? It was somewhat protected from the elements,...this is not an RD3 setup, it...

    Wire up the RDTC newbie

All I need to do is make the 4 connections on the HM board to the jack for pins 1 & 2, 7 & 8? I'm assuming that those thru holes make connections some where in one of the layers of the board? What's the best way to solder the wire into the thru holes for the jack? What sort of wire did you...

    LCD displaying gibberish

This is intermittent - it sometimes displays fine, then other times all gibberish. I'm figuring it's a cold soldered joint or a missed joint - so I'll be checking all the joints. Any other ideas welcome!

    Various Questions for Inquiring Minds

I'm going to the next level on my HM setup - 1) How did people wire up the standard fan? I took a CAT 5 ethernet cable, cut off the end, soldered the wires and used electrical tap with a single wire tie around the fan as a strain relief. 2) I'm working on a weather proof/mobile setup - my...

    2nd Build - Fan running 100%

On my first HM build I encountered this - I had the fan wired incorrectly to the 5v lead :) I'm using the fan that works on my 1st HM just fine - On the new build it runs 100% all the time - I tried turning it off hitting the left button to for lid open and it kept cruising at 100% Any ideas...

Question - oscillating above set point

My settings are as follows, 4, .02, 5 I would expect the temp to oscillate around the set point, not above it?

1st Adventure with Pork Belly to Bacon

9 day cure, salt/pepper/bay leaf/nutmeg/brown sugar, overnight in the fridge to dry out, on the smoker going with apple for the first one. Using Bob Correll's smoking approach - doing 6 hours @ 135 and bumping pit temp to 160 until the meat hits 140F. Using the HeaterMeter for this event - :)

Wireless access to HM from Android/Windows client

I'm a networking ignoramus. Now that we have that out of the way :) This is what I see from my wired network. From a wireless client - under "Available" on windows laptop, it gives me "timeout" on android devices I get "error". I turned off the dnsmesg service, but, that didn't make any...

    First Run this weekend

I ran into something weird. I had the HM powered up and running in my office for a few days, testing it with a hot water pot and fiddling with the settings some - getting familiar with alarms, etc. It worked flawlessly thru multiple power cycles, no problems. Got the wifi setup and had all...

    Lid Open/Closed condition

Test run today - the pit temp will be below target, fan will kick on - run for several seconds and then the "Lid Open" message appears momentarily and disappears and the fan kicks back on again. Any ideas?

    Blower and Damper?

I have an 18 and 22" weber smoker. Usually I'm running a full smoker - keeping temps up is more of an issue than keeping them down. I rarely use water in the pan. I'm trying to figure out if you have good control/constriction to the blower (if it's not running, air is not freely flowing), why...

    Got everything sorted out!

I got a cable to wire up the fan today and when I initially tested it the speed didn't vary no matter what I did. Did some searching and checked the voltage and (surprise, surprise) I had it wired to the 5V lead. I cut all the wires and then just put a V-meter on each and then changed the...

Works fine on USB, 12V not so much

I hooked up the 12V power supply tonight and the unit powers on, it appears to go thru the boot sequence and then beeps, all lights flash off/on and it appears to reboot. Does this continuously. Works fine on the USB power, had it up a couple days no issues. Any ideas?

    Thermocouple probe insertion force

I got one of these: https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B008S0K9KU/tvwb-20 REED Instruments TP-01 Beaded Thermocouple Wire Probe, Type K Are the pins on the TC supposed to be entirely inserted into the connector on the TM? It is very tight, and I didn't want to force it - thinking there...

    Error messages in system log

    First Build

What an awesome community and huge kudos to Bryan! This is my first build on this - I built for the thermocouple option. Nothing remarkable on the boot output that I can tell :) I've booted it a couple of times, configured the wireless access. LCD was lighting but blank, figured out I had to...

    Stainless grates for WSM

I'm about at my whits end with broken links and dead ends trying to find some replacement SS grill grates for my smokers. I bought new ones for bother earlier this year and I've used them enough I'm showing the copper platting thru the nickel. I'm done with these and need to get some more...

Old hand with 18.5" WSM, just bought a 22.5" Woo-Hoo!

Doing the initial smoke on it today! Got 2 chickens butterflied and ready to go. One thing I have noticed -it's taking a lot longer to get up to temp than my 18.5" even without water in the pan.
