HM 4.2 LCD goes out when blower plugged in

I got my 4.2 board all soldered up. Strapped on the Pi and fired things up. Everything looked good and I changed the Pit0 setting to TC so the reading went from "The Sun" to ambient 73 degrees F. Plugged in the blower (blower only, no servo) and the LCD went blank. Adjust contrast didn't do...

thermocouple question (yes I looked through search results)

I've bullied my brother and BBQ competition teammate into going the HM route. I think I'm going to go the thermocouple option but am totally lost on what "style" to get. I know K type and all that but what are the rest of you TCers out there using in your WSMs? I have been positioning my...

    Multiple HM vs. Stoker question

My brother has gotten the competition BBQ bug and is looking to add some ATC to his WSM fleet (18" and 22"). He's looking at the stoker primarily due to its ability to control multiple pits. Of course , I'm trying to steer him to the HM build because I'm biased. Looking at the latest from the HM...

Where does your HM live during a cook

Almost done (again) and should be Heater Metering for my next cook. Where do you all have your HM during the cook. I have an 18.5 WSM and usually just hang my ET-73 on the lid lip or sit it on a table beside the smoker. Any elegant solutions out there suitable for this temp controller? Todd

    HeaterMeter with laptop

I'm just digging into this and have a question about the computer side of the build. Has anyone tried to substitute a Linux laptop to take the place of the RPi? I have done this with an Arduino Uno for a beer fermentation controller using the BrewPi software and didn't know if the HM project...

6 butts, 18.5 WSM, unsatisfactory results

I tried to do a mega-smoke this weekend. Usually I cook two butts at a time. This time, I tried six. They were all around 7 pounds. I'll spare all the details unless someone is extra curious. The bottom line is that the meat was on for about 17 hours before I had to start taking it off and...

    vacuum bag / roll size

I've ordered a Weston 2300 vacuum sealer and was wondering what size bags or rolls to get. For now, I'm going to be putting pulled pork into 1 - 2 pound packages. Anyone got any suggestions as to an optimal size or combo pack? Thanks. Todd

Piedmont red slaw (the anti coleslaw)

I haven't seen this discussed as a recipe yet so here goes. It is a necessity for me to have with pork BBQ but also works well has a hamburger or hot dog condiment. Personally, I think that even uttering the words cole slaw when there is pork on the smoker is a travesty. 1 head cabbage (grated)...

charcoal grate 3 in 1 mod

I've got a friend visiting this weekend who is an ex-welder turned farmer. To keep us out of too much trouble, I've beg, borrowed, and come close to stealing the equipment and supplies to weld up the steel for the 3 in 1 mod. It's an overkill thing for sure but we'll have some fun melting...

    ET-73 comments

I posted earlier that my Maverick Redi-Chek ET-73 arrived during my jerky smoke the Saturday before last. I put the thermometer into service then and was disappointed with the range of the wireless signal. I read all the posts here regarding the antenna issues. I cracked my receiver open last...

    $0.99/lb butts at my HT

The Teeter has Hormel butts for 99 cents a pound this week. I've had mixed success with these (Hormels at Harris Teeter) but at that price I gotta move on 'em. Now, how to convince SWMBO to eat 'que for a few days. Todd
