Correct! The mini is perfect for making bbq goodies. It makes a great fattie and moinks. I do find that it gets a little hot for ABTs though.

Smokey Joe cooking grate for 2nd wsm 18" charcoal grate!

A slightly cheaper and much more durable grate is the 18" charcoal grate. It's the same size as the Smokey Joe cooking grate but will hold up to the lit charcoal better. I use it in my smoker.

    clay pot method?

"Properly" and bbq don't always mix. It will still work just fine.

I use Fire King made by Struemphs and the Mesquite lump sold at Sams. Fire King sells for around $12 for 20lbs and the Mesquite is $15 for 40lbs. I highly recommend the Fire King.

I was going to use the steamer tray you see below as the heat sync tray but after cutting out the design I thought it might be too weak to hold it once exposed to high temps. I bought the charcoal grate for the 18" kettle to use instead.

These are the only pics I have of the charcoal basket now. I recycled some expanded sheet metal I had from another bbq project. I think it's about 6 inches tall.

FYI: My charcoal basket sits higher than the bottom edge of the steamer when placed on the grill.

I didn't "need" one either. I wanted it for an ABT/Fattie cooker. I do think it's less hassle to fire up the mini than the regular wsm.

It looks the same to me. Besides Walmart has a great return policy. I once saw a woman return a pair of jeans that the clerk said they didn't even carry. They gave her store credit.

I have the silver model and I think it works great. I've seen people mention the gold model is really good for this mod because the vents are on the sides more like a regular WSM. Personally, I say whatever is cheapest is the one to go with. I had no problem controlling the temps in the silver...

Try cooking oil. Spray Pam will work. Just make sure to wash it very good if you plan to paint it.

I ran it for a few hours (making ABTs and a Fattie) and after it cooled most of it was gone. What was left rubbed off with a green scrub pad.

    Ribs on the Mini WSM

Decided to cook some ribs today in the mini WSM. I was going to just throw them on the regular WSM but wanted to see how the mini could handle them. I'm really glad I went with the mini for a few reasons. 1. It took less than 20 Walmart briquettes to cook the ribs for 5 hours and held temps...

I think it turned out pretty good. The paint took very well to the pot and held up just fine to todays ribs and fattie. The fattie's been on for about 30-45 minutes.
