Brand New Damper Design - "The Micro Damper"

As a FYI to everyone. I am going to be out of town for work for a few days, with that said I'm going to be shutting down the shop while I'm away. I'll post back up when it's available again. I apologize for any inconvenience but my job takes me away from home occasionally.

Brand New Damper Design - "The Micro Damper"

It's not too much trouble if you want me to help out. As far as the "universal" version. You tell me what you can get, and you tell me the diameter you need. It takes very little effort on my part to change that part of the model, so perhaps that'd be the best way to procede. How about you...

Brand New Damper Design - "The Micro Damper"

Yeah you had it printed in that fancy metal based filament through Shapeways. Not sure what the printing temperature of that stuff would be. But typical 3D printing plastic is printed around 200 degrees Celsius and for the most part I think these plastics will start distorting around 140...

Brand New Damper Design - "The Micro Damper"

There are quite a few MicroDampers in the UK, hopefully someone will chime in because I've never been asked about this - I've always assumed people have been able to source it somewhere because nobody has ever asked. If you want I can send you some parts to get it done, shoot me an email

This no longer works with changes that have been made to the MicroDamper

Brand New Damper Design - "The Micro Damper"

Looks good. I didn't know a 1.25" fitting would fit over the BBQ Guru adapter, that's really good to know, because anything that fits inside reduces the diameter further than I recommend. One thing to note, it's probably not a good idea to sweat the pipes together without checking the MSDS on...

    Post your live HeaterMeter Cooks

Your link doesn't work for me, but depending on size 6 hours is about right. It's not unusual to see a stall, and depending on a bunch of conditions (humidity is a big one) it's not out of the norm for the temp to come down a degree or two during a stall since your meat is undergoing...

Help. Low Pit Temp with MicroDamper & HeaterMeter

I have two cooking grates. The top one is 2" below the top lip of the drum (I use a weber lid to fit food on this grate), and the second grate is 6-8 inches below that (I don't remember exactly). When I cook I throw a disposable hotel pan on the second cooking grate to catch drippings.

Help. Low Pit Temp with MicroDamper & HeaterMeter

^^^^This. UDS can be super stable. The problem is not every UDS works the same, some prefer lump over briquettes, some prefer to run at 220 and others at 275. Two identically built UDS will have a different sweet spots - I know this because I've built and run half a dozen of them. It's best...

    Random newbie questions

Why would you want a controller if you plan on using your offset cooker as intended (with logs)?

    Pi zero w?

Is the Zero W compatibility fairly new? Last I knew it was Zero only, not Zero W

    Pi zero w?

No it does not. I think....now I've confused myself!

Can anyone help with PID adjustment?

One of the original MicroDamper owners (Benjamin Thibault) tuned his kettle (note: using a "Slow 'n' Sear") to 6, 0.017, 5 and from the looks of his graphs you'd think he was using a kamado because they are smooth as glass. The fan settings I'm not sure what he was using but I think you're...

How much 12V power is needed?

I've personally never had a problem with a 1amp adapter other than their longevity (and dropping them in water doesn't help either), then again the MD runs at only 100 mA so I guess it's further from pushing the limits.

Another mounting location thread for offsets.

I'm sure there are. I know of at least one person offhand, someone in the UK has done it with a MD, but for the life of me I can't think of their name. This was over a year ago. I HIGHLY recommend you make or buy a charcoal basket if you plan on using a controller on an offset rig. They...
