Okay, I have the entire grill torn down, and in the process of cleaning, sanding, and priming frame. Started cleaning the burners, and found that the welded on flange on the small crossover burner tube has rusted thru at one of the welds spots and several of the metal dividers between the burner...

What is the best way to prep the painted surfaces to prepare them for re painting? Sandpaper, steel wool? Should it be primed after sanding? I have disassembled the grill and the frame has several rusty areas. The exterior of the firebox needs to be painted too.

Picked this one up Saturday for free! It's really dirty, but structurally is great shape. Everything works. Igniter works, grates, flavor bars, and burners are in great shape, although, the flames are mostly orange. It was full of grease, didn't look like it had ever been turned on hi to burn...
