giant chip in porcelain - on a performer

http://help.weber.com/warranties.aspx Bowls are warranted for ten years against "rust/burn-through." Whether Weber considers chipped porcelain to constitute "burn-through," I cannot say.

giant chip in porcelain - on a performer

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-title">quote:</div><div class="ip-ubbcode-quote-content">from the looks of it, its where one of the grate holding straps is welded on the inside. </div></BLOCKQUOTE> I have noticed that, when the outer porcelain finish fails...

    Bar-B-Kettle

I would be surprised if the lid vent is stamped with a patent number. The patent at issue teaches a design that eliminated the need for thumbscrews in the leg sockets.

Red SS performer - recent CL for $40

Vincent, you should also be prepared, when your propane tank runs out, to replace it. No reputable propane supplier will refill it, as it is not equipped with an overfill protection device ("OPD"). The tip-off to the tank's obsolescence is the star-shaped handwheel for the tank valve...

    CL Burgundy SS

I notice that you switched out the plastic lid handle for wood. That's a nice touch on a really striking (and with the CI grates, really serious) grill. Great job!

Less quality in metal with the new webers?

Two of my lids are red; the other two are black. None of the four feels any heavier than the other three. However, the red porcelain finish on the early seventies lid somehow "feels" thicker than the finish on the 1991 red and the two blacks.

Less quality in metal with the new webers?

I have a lid manufactured in the early seventies, a second from 1991, a third from 1999, and a fourth from 2006. I can perceive no difference in the weights of any of them.

Weber Kettle Rotisserie Compatibility with the Performer

Joe, I attach the ring only to use the rotisserie, or to increase the kettle's capacity when I need the room - say, for a 20+ lb turkey or a suckling pig. The ring comes off when the meal at hand is finished.

Weber Kettle Rotisserie Compatibility with the Performer

I use my rotisserie on my 1991 Performer frequently, without any issue of any kind.

    My latest aquisition!!!

To clarify, the application for US Patent 3,538,906 was filed in November 1968, and the patent was issued in November 1970. I have seen a few pictures of lid vents stamped not with the patent number, but "Pat. Pending." I expect that these lids were manufactured during the 1968 - 1970 time...

    Lefties and the Performer

Lew, I understand your concern. I have learned to live with it. A larger annoyance for this southpaw is the fact that the tuck-away lid holder does not allow the lid to clear the grate as well as my slide-aside on another kettle.

    Charcoal only griller

I don't know if my charcoal is different, or my propane is different, or my gas grill is different, but I have always been able to get my kettles way, WAY hotter than I could ever get the gas grill.

    Rotisserie question

I just spun a pair of birds on my charcoal roti this evening. Lid on.

    Old Kettle

It is certainly not late '60's. The patent number stamped on the lid vent was issued in November 1970.

    which do you perfer?????

I have a 1991 red stainless w/o gas assist. Aside from the color, which is obviously unavailable in the new style, I believe that the new style is more functional than mine. The thermoset work surface is larger, will stand up to high temperature, requires no work to keep shiny and little work...

    Old Kettle

Kendall, if you have seen a Bar-B-Q Kettle stamped with the "A" date code, then some of my assumptions have been incorrect.

    Old Kettle

Kendall, based on the lid vent, I am guessing that your kettle was manufactured in the late '70s. Lid vents for kettles manufactured earlier in the decade had smaller holes, a narrower tab for adjusting the vent, and did not have the large lower case "weber" lettering in the center - take a...
