    Heatermeter Adhoc mode?

Haven't done it, so I'm not sure how, but you might try searching for 'access point mode', rather than ad-hoc. it's been discussed on the forum. Basically, the HM will be your router & feed any device that connects to it an IP & data.

Can v4.0 or 4.1 run from 5v power?

Cut it in the middle and add more wire, it's only 2 wires, probably 18 gauge or smaller. I have franken-cables all over the house.... I have 1 power supply that I put quick disconnects at the plug end so that I can use different size plugs on the same supply (for things that rarely get used...

    Second batch of Heatermeters

Still amazes/annoys me that the package for the nano-wifi adapter is bigger than the package for the Pi. They could shave $0.50 off the price just from the shipping alone.

If you re-used the ATMEGA, try re-flashing it from the web interface. Not a huge chance of it being your issue, but it can't hurt.

From and for an electronics newbie

Yeah, but I'd have to buy a toaster oven....I now have 2 decent irons & a hot air setup. I needed to pull some micro relays, the iron wouldn't do it, so I bought an Ayoue 968A. That kinda blew through my project budget.... (that and 2x $100 orders from mouser, $80 crimper, etc, but don't tell...

From and for an electronics newbie

Heh, for my first try at SMD, I used a USB microscope. My desk is so horribly cluttered that I had my soldering project to the left of my laptop, but the microscope program was on the 2nd screen to the right. My hands were so damn uncoordinated it wasn't funny. Looking at the board to get...

From and for an electronics newbie

Better than your hand... I just blew up an electrolytic capacitor as I was removing some SMT FETs that I want to re-use... Talk about magic smoke! I still haven't found the casing. the one next to it got blown off it's pads.

    General 3D Printing Thread

This will be a how-to for turning a big pile of money into a little pile of money. Even if they double their current donations, <10k units of an item that retails for $299 is going to be tough to pay for tooling of your largest component. They are in no-mans land of too big for a small group to...

The LEDs are easy to adjust, just leave them long. The LCD is more difficult - I'd leave it high as well if you are going to adjust later. Or put a cable on it.

From and for an electronics newbie

You don't really need additional flux with through-hole & rosin core solder. (rosin=flux). it can help on SMD pads to keep the solder in place when reflowing. Save the pics & zoom in if needed. Pad / lead / tip. Touch tip where pad & lead meet. wait ~1sec. touch solder to where pad &...

From and for an electronics newbie

If you can touch the pad & lead at the same time with the tip, you're golden. I use .032" solder, but only because I found a 5lb spool. Bigger will work, smaller would be a PITA, but it would work too. Populate the components, then go back & check to make sure you've got them in the right...

Maverick ET-733 probes on HM 4.1

AHH - didn't notice 733. I was referring to 732. Sorry for the confusion.

Maverick ET-733 probes on HM 4.1

Hmm, doesn't look like the circuit has changed for 4.1. Did you change the preset coeffecients in the config webpage? if you have them set to ET72/73 (default) you'll never get a reading. Do you have a thermistor for ambient? Does it work. You could try to change the resistors to 22k, but I...

Maverick ET-733 probes on HM 4.1

My experience with HM4.0: At room temp, the 732 probes are right on the edge of the ADC range. Try warming them up to ~90* (Hot water) & see if they start working. If so, you can change the resistors from 10k to 22k. I still have the 10k on my 4.0, I don't need temp readings below 100* bad...

    Remote Access Issues

gotta be in your router settings then. It's been years, but I recall port forwarding to be stupid on linksys firmware. DD-WRT or tomato as soon as a router comes out of the box for me (been using ASUS routers recently, better value, easy to flash).

    Remote Access Issues

just tried to connect to your heatermeter. If it's still on, .org isn't working (immediate timeout). .biz tries to connect, which i think means no-ip is trying to forward. I haven't used linksys firmware in ages, but on tomato, I just had to forward the port & turn nat loopback on. My DSL...

    Remote Access Issues

can you still connect from inside your LAN via the direct IP address? Is your cell phone connected to your wifi? If so, your router could be blocking the LAN-WAN-LAN routing. You need to look for 'NAT Loopback' in your router & make sure it's enabled. You can test this by disconnecting your...

    HM 4.1 LCD failure?

Use a heat-gun to preheat the row of pins. I usually mount it somehow to keep blowing on the pcb (not too close) while I hit each pin with iron & pry from one end to other. after a few runs through, you'll get the pins clear. Still not easy, but it works. I've also used circlip pliers to keep...

    Recommended PID values

I think the stock PID values were arrived at via testing on a big green egg, which makes sense since that is what Bryan uses. The PID isn't a magic bullet, it's the 'next step' in precision control of a system. It's a 'learning' system that will reduce variation - but it will take longer to...
