Just bought Smokey Joe Platinum 18.5

It's interseting that about 50% of SJ platinum owners say that the side vents are sufficient and about 50% say they the vents are insufficient to crete a proper conveciton and prefer the bottom vents. I'll give you my opinion once I test it out this weekend. Mike

Just bought Smokey Joe Platinum 18.5

Craig, Can you tell me whether I need a drip pan or a charcoal basket? Do you move the coals to one side for indirect cooking? I was hoping to use it to basically bake whole chicken. I was hoping to "set it and forget it." Do you use a second charcoal grate for lump and how much lump do you...

Can you cook a whole chicken on this grill?

Rich, I think that's a very reasonable theory and that was my initial reaction as well. What is the PCI grate mod? Are you placing a smaller charcoal grate on top of the larger one? Mike

Roasting a whole lamb on a rotesserie for Easter

Kevin, thanks for the response. Yes, we have a good quality rotis that we got from www.kanesbbq.com. Can you tell me what if anything do you put in the cavity of the lamb, before it's sewn up. I was thinking of throwing some lemon halves in there and possibly some fresh herbs but I don't know...

What's your theory as to why they discontinued it if it works well?

Roasting a whole lamb on a rotesserie for Easter

This easter I will be roasting a 35lb lamb on a rotesserie grill. I am planning on making a marinade of lemon, very little olive oil, sea salt and pepper. This is a very basic marinade. Has anyone roasted a whole lamb on a spit and can you tell me what you used as a mariande or for spices...

The Pork Butt Black Bear Project

Yeah..I know..the wheelbarrow was just an added touch. I was thinking maybe the WSM was too heavy to pick up.

I am seriously contemplating the SJP mod of installing a vent in the bottome of the bowl and an ash catcher under the vent. Any opinions. Mike

The Pork Butt Black Bear Project

Mary, I had no clue that a bear would ever show up in my yard. I didn't even think that bears lived around here at all. I have been feeding the birds with my bird feeder for three years now uneventfully. There have been no previous problems with bears in my neighborhood. It wasn't until I...

Just bought Smokey Joe Platinum 18.5

Just bought a SMJ Platinum (18.5 inch) grill on ebay for a total with shipping of $44.00. I have looked at some of the previous discussions on this grill and there seems to be quite a few people who say that a bottom vent modifction with an ash catcher are just what this grill needs to increase...

The Pork Butt Black Bear Project

Well, I'm a red sox fan. We're not afraid of bears or cubs. I just got the following information from [URL=http://www.yellowstone-bearman.com/B_housesafe.html:] "Barbecue Grills 1. Clean grills regularly 2. Store grills in the basement or other secure location when not in use. 3. Clean...

    WSM on a wooden deck?

Just use your drip pan and weight down the legs so that it will be more unlikley to tip.

The Pork Butt Black Bear Project

Sadly, I am not kidding whatsoever. When I went out to rake the coals at 2:30 a.m., I was clutching a baseball bat and looking over my shoulder. Yes, I admit, it is and was funny. It probably was a stupid idea. The cook came out great however. I used the texas bbq rub. Here is a picutre of...

    WSM on a wooden deck?

I don't think it's a problem if you have a metal pan large enough and if the wsm is stable and secure when it's standing. But the question is, if the wsm tips over for any reason, will the charcoal fall on metal or wood?

The Pork Butt Black Bear Project

Last night I began a pork butt cook with some trepidation due to the fact that there was a black bear in my back yard about a week ago. The consensus on this site appears to be that critters, including bears, would not tamper with the wsm due to the smoke and heat. I have never had a problem...

How would you compare smokiness between your recent cook using the wsm and the DO with any previous pork butt cooks using only the wsm? Mike
