Clay pot base in place of water pan?

I'm going to keep using my clay pot base. If it cracks, I will switch to a 14" pizza stone. One thing I've wondered, does the clay pot base have lead in it? If so, does heating it release lead that would get onto or into the food?

    Media-blasting a Weber?

How about running each section through a self-cleaning oven cycle (remove the handle)? This works on cast iron skillets. On second thought, it may be a bad idea. The aluminum vents may not be able to take the heat of self-cleaning oven temperatures.

    Foodsaver ??

We just bought a Foodsaver Advanced V2240. It's hands free and has wet and dry settings along with instant seal. We no longer need our 5-year old Foodsaver Compact II. It still works great but doesn't have the features of the newer Advanced models. I will give the Foodsaver Compact II free to...

"quality" bimetal thermometer through guru eyelet?

I just thought of a solution to the wireless thermometer problem. Have the best of both worlds. Use an analog bimetal thermometer and monitor it remotely with a low cost wireless video camera. You could use a WIFI laptop with a webcam near the WSM. You could also use a wireless low cost video...

Clay pot base in place of water pan?

Your pizza stone may be the ultimate way to go. It's designed for oven temperatures and repeated heating and cooling cycles. Clay plant saucers are not. Rusty

    Another Thermometer Question

At WalMart and many other places you can buy a turkey fryer thermometer that is about 9-inches long. It reads from 100 to 500 F. It also comes with a clip that can be attached to the WSM lid handle. The probe will go into the vent hole about 5-inches at a slight angle, avoiding food on the top...

Clay pot base in place of water pan?

I have done that. Our local WalMart has a 16" clay pot base (terracotta) that fits exactly into the water pan brackets. It is $ 8.50. In addition, I placed a 15" shiny steel pizza pan on top of the clay base to catch drips and reflect any radiant heat. I used this configuration to cook a beef...

    BBQ'ed Beef Bottom Round

BBQ'ed Beef Bottom Round I was at WalMart the other day and they had Beef bottom round roasts for $ 1.98 lb. I bought a six pound bottom round and decided to bbq it. It was about 8 inches long, 6 inches wide and 4 inches thick. It had a 1/8 in thick fat layer on one side. Reading threads in...

Radiant heat with the 14in clay base

I picked up a 16-inch terracotta plant pot base from Wal Mart for $ 8.50. It fits perfectly on the waterpan mounts without the waterpan. I going to try it out this weekend. Rusty

    BBQ items on a plane

I fly on business travel coast to coast about 10 times a year. For carry ons, you can take liquids and gels onboard that will fit in a single 1-qt zip lock bag. Each liquid / gel tube or bottle must be 2-oz or less in size. Each person is only allowed a single zip lock bag. You have to take...

Suggested set up for Charcoal Grate - two cross rods on topside.

I tried this using briquettes, but the ash builds up on the grate and partially smothers the coals. It may be ok for lump, but not for briquettes. Rusty

Worse brisket ever! Bumbed out big time :(

Maybe it was just a bad cut of meat. You might salvage the meat by using it in a slow cooker stew. Rusty

    First ever smoke today

Paul, I have the same Vertical Brinkmann that I also bought from WalMart. I used it before I bought my WSM. I also had to add a charcoal grate to the charcoal bowl to keep the charcoal from being snuffed out by its own ashes. My main problem with it was airleaks around the large door. Mine had...
