I decided to go for it and was able to build and install the cdc_acm.ko module and now have a /dev/ttyACM0. I was actually successful building the entire snapshot LEDE environment on Windows 10 WSL 2 with Ubuntu 19.10. It required a few patches, but was mostly painless.

Looks like the current AVR Firmware /devel/snapshots/trunk is 20200209B (heatermeter.hex) while the 20200214 Pi Snapshot I'm using has AVR Firmware /lib/firmware/hm.hex ver 20200210B. I would have thought the AVR trunk would be newer, unless maybe you're manually publishing the trunk snapshot...

With the latest firmware snapshots, both my Edimax EW-7811Un and LOTEKOO Ralink RT5370 based WiFi dongles are now working fine. I ran a 4-day ping test on the Edimax without any dropouts.
