I just tried this swap at my house. I swapped a Stainless Steel Genesis Gold B top onto a Genesis 1000 lx firebox. I'd say they 'mostly' fit. The Hinges line up perfectly but, When i open it there is a slight rub between the back of the firebox and the back of the hood. Not a deal breaker...
So just confirmed. The hood from my Silver b with the center thermo fits on my 1000 lx.
So, instead of drilling a whole through your hood. Buy a cheap silver b on craigslist and just swap the hoods.

I tried a quick few wipes with 0000 steel wool, but it didnt seem to do much. Is there a different process for stainless steel vs the colored porcelain enameled weber hoods?
I thought it was because more bars held heat better? The more material between the burners and the grates the better the grill should be at holding heat after you open up the lid.
I have a 1998 Weber Genesis 1000 with the Side Thermo and a 2005 Weber Silver B with the center Thermo. I wonder if you could just buy an Genesis Silver/Gold/Platinum and swap the lids. The Grates are interchangeable, so maybe the lids are
That's interesting, I always through that condiment rack meant it was a Spirit as i've seen so many of them with Spirit written on them. Now i know, older Genesis Grill(2005 only?) can have them also.
So i'm an idiot. Even though the firebox wasn't threaded...the frame seems to be. So, i turned the carriage bolt around and so the head is on the inside and will put a washer and bolt on the outside.
What did you replace it with? I read only that its a 5/16th by 2" bolt. I just ran to ace to pick up a stainless steel replacement. But, it doesnt seem that the firebox has any threading. Should i have a stainless steel bolt on the inside?
