How big a turkey can the 18.5 take?

Hi all,

I've been away from the board for a while because I couldn't smoke while we were selling our house. We're finally in the new place and the wife has demanded, yes demanded, that I smoke a turkey for her birthday next week.

We're having people over so she wants a 15 pounder. I'm not having luck finding any size limits for turkey.

I'm sure someone here can tell me.

Thanks.

for really big ones you can set em on the bottom rack and do it up like a beer can chicken sitting upright.

i really like splitting them or even quartering them if they are really big so the breast meat doesnt dry out while cooking. for really big turkeys i like quarteing because it allows me to remove individual pieces as they come done. i have never been a fan of cooking turkey whole as it almost assures that one section or another of the bird will be overdone.

I've done an 18lb. bird on the top grate no problem. I know Shawn W from up North did a 28 lb bird several years ago. He had to stand it up on the bottom grate IIRC.
