Well it is chilly but we are still going out for crab.
This took less than a half day.
We spent the other half of the day trying to fill my buddy’s cow elk tag.
These pics kinda show how I steam them.

quite envious here. best crab we ever had was in Hoonah AK this summer. so dang good we're going to go back to AK in the near future.

They are Dungeness crab.
The Dungeness crab get their name from our area.

The pics show a modified turkey fryer basket.
I cut the basket so the lid could properly close and added some bolts to keep the crab out of the water.
Steamed crab taste much better than violently boiled crab.
Boiled crab tastes blandish and loses a lot of its sweetness for me.
I only do an 8 minute hot steam over 2 to 2-1/2 inches of water.
This goes real fast and saves propane since I only heat a small amount of water.

I recently had a guest in a hurry to get home.
I told him it would take about 20 minutes to process the crab.
We had the fryer set up so we timed it.
A bucket of live crab to an igloo of cooked and iced crab in 18 minutes.
That 2-1/2 inches of water works great.

So jealous, it’s been a few years since I’ve been able to go out crabbing.
Hard to believe that my better half once said that she was “tired of crab”.
Those were the days, lots of fresh Dungies to enjoy!

Yeah, it’s nice to get out on the salt chuck. Unfortunately these days there are too many unsavoury individuals that raid or steal any unattended traps.
We now have to literally park on top of our traps to protect them.
I know of several people that have lost all their traps.

It’s still an awesome time to be out on the water and catching these wonderful/ tasty morsels.

That sux. We were blown away by the kindness of people there. The sea life was abundant and the waters were crystal clear.

Nice haul Andy!
My brothers and I used to always take a crab net with us when we went pier fishing back in the day. Even if we didn't catch any fish, we always brought home a half gunny sack or so of crabs. One of the few things I miss about living in S. F.
