Which used Genesis to get?

Guys, great site. I came across the site while doing research for a used Weber. I've learned a lot in just the past few days! I have a few questions on which LP Weber to look for. I'm looking for an older Genesis Silver/Gold model, 3 knob, side burner, shelves of some sort on both sides, and would like to have cabinet doors for the storage under the grill.

1- when did weber start making the doors for the under storage? I'd rather have the tank go underneath and hidden, but it's not a must. Is a Genesis from 2010 as well built as one from 2005?

2- I definitely want an older used grill. I would love to rehab a grill like many of you here have done, rather than buying a "Hunk of Shiny Junk". Did Weber make a better grill during certain years? ie.- is a Genesis 1000 better than the Genesis Silver B? At what year did China get involved?

3- when looking at older Genesis Silver models, it looks as if the tank sits on the ground (under the knobs). Are they really on the ground? I would think the wheels would somewhat be useless if the tank wasn't attached to the cart. Any info on this would be great.

4- the Thermoset work tables, how easy is it to get them clean? I see a lot of pictures on CL where the side tables look grease-stained and dirty. Do the tables come back to life after a good cleaning?

I'm sure I'll have many other questions. Sorry about the many questions in one post, but getting answers to as many questions would be awesome.

Thanks,
Pete.

I don't know that any are "better" it's more a matter of taste, availability and price. As for the tank on the side frankly I like that better and no it does not sit on the ground it hangs on a scale. Definitely better to find a used Weber than a new porch ornament though

Thanks for the reply. My thought on 'better' is durability. In many CL pictures, I've seen the scale, just can't be certain if I see the scale on all of them. Thanks again.

Only the Spirit model is made in China. The Summit and Genesis models are still built in the USA. I believe that happened around 2007 after Weber bought Ducane. I own a Genesis 2011 EP-330 and it is one heavy duty built SOB. My brother has a 2001 Genesis Silver B that is still going strong. Old or new it's still a Weber. The Spirit is modeled after the pre-2007 Genesis but is not built nearly as well in my opinion. It looks and feels a little to cheesy for me.

I've rehabbed & sold a '92 genesis silver and it'll run for years to come. My '06 silver C has SS doors and its more visual than anything. A cover will, well, cover anything on the bottom shelf. If you can find a Gold series, it'll have a few extra bells-&-whistles. (SS hood, SS flavorizer bars, SS grill grates, 2 flip up side tables). Personally, I prefer the porcelain cast iron grates over SS, but love the SS flavorizer bars. Going a little older will get you a red hood and that's a nice bird to have. :)

for the grimey side tables - that's not a concern. I haven't found a spray-&-wipe cleaner that works to my liking, but I have a system when I'm restoring these parts. Take a container large enough to hold the side tales (Rubbermaid storage) and add the parts to clean. Fill with water & dawn dish washing detergent until the parts are submerged. Let soak overnight. The next day, hit the parts with a scrubbie and they'll come back to original life. I've done it a few times with awesome results. But having a slimy exterior is a bargaining chip while negotiating.
