Which Performer???

So I am getting a new Performer, but I do not know which one to get. I have made up my mind, and getting the 22.5 grill. Should I pay the extra $50 and get the gas igniter?

I finally got around to getting a Performer with igniter after many years using regular kettles. Makes me want to kick myself in the butt for waiting so long. I strongly second the opinion that it is definitely worth the extra money.

$15 for this could be a better deal. I plan to get one for my new OTG.

The only thing that bothered me about the gas ignition in the Performer was that it promoted the use of the disposable cylinders. They are great for convenience and don't get me wrong but.....that much metal as a waste? So I bought the Platinum just for that very reason and a chimney. I do recycle...but now I use Map gas with a torch??? Go figure!! If I had it to do all over again I would buy the Performer and the hose to use with a refillable propane tank.

I don't understand fokls wanting a larger tank...a 1 lb tank will last me for months cooking at lot.I just rake the charcoal over the burner turn it on for 5 minutes , spread the coals and cook.I have a Q grill and I use 1 lb tanks also and it uses more.I have been refilling the 1 lb tanks from my large tank for years with no problem

Thanks for the adaptor info, Glen. After checking out the comments and tips for proper use, it looks like a no-brainer if you go through them fairly quickly.

Yes Glen thanks. Those bottles are marketed as disposable and I was not aware they could be filled! Wish I had known that before.

Harbor Freight also sells the adapters. I have been using them for awhile as well. I find if you freeze the empty canister it will take in the gas easier from the bigger tank.

Chip is right about putting the empty canisters in the freezer before filling.....if you don't you won't get a full canister. Also in the winter bring the large tank inside to warm up.

You folks across the border are going to chuckle at us but I've talked with a number of people including store clerks who sell these up here and I have not found anyone who knew there was a method to refill them. I wish I had known. Guess we just lead a more sheltered life up here.

I have one of the adapters and use it to refill my 1lb canisters. Just be aware that there are mixed feelings about the safety of refilling. If you do a google search you'll find people who come down on each side of the issue. Refill at your own risk.

I know it is illegal to do it commercially up here but I don't think so if you do it for yourself. In my other life we ran propane powered vehicles in North Bay and during the winter months when temps were -30 F. We had to fill our own vehicles. I've seen guys get burned from not being careful filling propane.

Thanks Bill. Yes some of these ideas come at a risk.
