Weber Silver B temperature

Hey guys. I have a Weber Silver B that seems to cook too hot. When preheating the grill it shoots up quickly to well over what the thermometer will read and almost back around to where it starts at 140. I've tried 2 different weber thermometers with the same readings. I contacted Weber and they said it had to be a manifold problem. I got the new manifold/regulator today with no change. With all 3 burners on low and nothing in it the grill reads around 500. The burner tubes are all in good shape. Flame looks good. Not really sure where to go from here. What temps are normal for this grill? Appreciate any help.

Hi Seth! Welcome!
I don't have a silver B, but I'm sure there are plenty of guys here who do, and could help you figure out your problem with the temperature quirk.. You mentioned you've had the grill a couple years...Did you buy it new? The reason I ask is because Weber said it's a manifold/regulator problem...if you by chance bought it used, am wondering if someone didn't try to convert a NG to a LP..and didn't change the orifices out.. but then again, Weber would know that too..
There's tons of guys with plenty of trouble shooting knowledge on here that will get it sorted out for you.. good luck, and again, Welcome!

Mary

My Silver B also buries thermometer to 550 plus, and I love to cook steaks on the high heat. Just a guess but did you look at the shutters on the end of the burners near the manifold? Mine are about halfway

What is the temperature with the burners set to low-off-low. What does it read with only one burner in low? I think temperatures between 400 and 500 degrees are normal with the three burners set to low. As GGross points out, the use of the three burners is perfect to cook steaks at high temps.

Thanks for the replies guys. Mary- I didn't buy it new. I think when I spoke to Weber they said it was a 2002 model or somewhere around there. It does say LP on the sticker with the serial # but I thought the same thing- that maybe someone switched out the orifices for a NG orifice. I guess they didn't lol. Weber wouldn't sell just the orifice- it's all or nothing so I got the whole manifold. GGross I forgot to mention I did play with the air shutters to see if it made a difference in temp but it really didn't seem to. Most of the difference was just the flame length or color so I put them back to where they were. Alejandro the burners set to low off low was around 400. Not sure about one burner. I'll check those and report back. I've done great cooking steaks on the grill- mainly the issues were with chicken and hamburgers. Most of the other grills I used with all burners on low are around 350* and with all burners high around 550-600. Wasn't sure if it was an issue with the grill or if I just need to change how I'm cooking.
