Weber 22.5 Gold- Charcoal grate

I have a 22.5" Gold one touch. I tried to grill some Tilapia (fish) on the grill and it stuck like crazy. I think one of the main reasons was because I didn't use enough charcoal. I tried to go with less charcoal because I didn't want to waste it on 3 misely fillets. I started thinking about the reason why the 22.5 takes so much charcoal. The main reason is because the coals are so far away from the grate if you don't pile it high. I wondered if anyone has devised a method to decrease the space in between the charcoal grate and the cooking grate so small cooks don't take so much charcoal. I thought about finding a charcoal grate that is larger in size and putting that in place of the original which would decrease the space in between. Any ideas?

Cooking any filets, and particularly small ones, on a grill grate is going to be difficult and they will tend to come apart when flipping or trying to remove them. Always use a hot fire - bank coals to one side of the Weber and you can easily get by with 3/4 full chimney. Preheat your grate and definitely clean it with a brush and season with a piece of paper towel dipped in vegetable oil and rubbed over the grill grate. Use tongs to do this. All of that will help, but still those thin filets don't lend themselves to easily cooking on a grill grate. I think your best bet is a fish basket like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Char-Broil-...758?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5aeff4358e

Good luck!

yes, but also you need to oil the fish. the fish will release when its ready to so don't try to hurry things.
i might ad that its time to look at an sj or go-anywhere grill for stuff like that.

If you want to raise the charcoal grate then go to Ace or Tru-value and buy a set of Weber charcoal rails and a spare charcoal grate. Lock the rails on the original grate and rotate the new one @ a 90 and set it on the rails.
There's a thread around here where I did the same thing for the top grate, if you're interested I'll see if I can find it.

Thank you for the idea. Looks good. I'll try something like that. I wish Weber would get the engineers together to design an adjustable charcoal grate for the Kettle. It would make it much more efficient. I do small cooks a lot and would make the 22.5 much more versatile at least in MHO.
