Vent settings on a GA?

Ok i just bought this grill. Wanna know a few tips how to maximize its potency.

Direct is ofc Direct. But if you cook indirect like a whole chicken...How do i setup the vents in the most efficiant way? I did a chicken on our camping trip. But it took a really long time. It dident fit under the lid so i put some foil on the charcoal grate and put the chicken next to it.(rotated twise). My bottom vents was max opend on the charcoal side,and max closed on the indirect side. Top over the coals were closed and opend over the indirect side. This to me makes sense. But still took a verry long time. How do you set thwe vents for indirect cooking?
